10 Tips for Baking Perfect Cupcakes

Cupcake hacks that make the difference

Cupcakes make a great dessert choice for special occasions and are easy to make too! 


What is really important are the following steps which will ensure a great finished cupcake. Happy baking and eating too!


  1. Ingredients should be at room temperature (milk, butter, eggs, buttermilk….you get it)
  2. Do not overmix the batter as this can make the cupcake dense and chewy…yuck!
  3. Use a cupcake scoop for evenly baked cupcakes OR weigh with a scale if the batter is thin
  4. Do not overfill cupcake liners. Been there, done that. Lots of overflow. What a mess!
  5. Bake cupcakes in the center rack of the oven for more even heating
  6. Use a toothpick inserted into the center to test doneness..few crumbs are fine 
  7. Remove cupcakes from the pan after a short 10 minute wait and cool on cookie rack
  8. Cool cupcakes completely before frosting 
  9. Pipe the frosting with a pastry tip. I love making simple swirls with a Wilton 2D. 
  10. Store in an airtight container if you aren’t eating right away. Gallon Ziplock bags work well too!
